Research the Archives

The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum boasts a unique collection of archival resources, made possible with a partnership between the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners, the Clerk of Courts, and the Historical Society. These valuable historical materials are preserved and protected in the museum’s research library and are available for research and education.

Citrus County Clerk of the Court Records

The Clerk of the Court Records include documents such as land records, court records, and marriage records. Also housed in the Citrus County Archives are the Citrus County Property Appraiser, Tax Collector, and Supervisor of Election records. Official Clerk of the Court records and documents after 1982 may be viewed by visiting the Citrus County Clerk of the Circuit Court website below.

Citrus County Historical Society Research Collection

The Citrus County Historical Society collection includes local newspapers, such as the Citrus County Chronicle, photographs, maps, school yearbooks, family scrapbooks, oral histories, and more. There is also a library of Florida history books, novels, biographies, and other secondary reference material available for viewing in the museum. Book loan requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. For additional details on our archival collection, download the Guide to the Citrus County Archives and Collections.

The photographic collections for celebrating Citrus County’s 125th Anniversary may be found at the Citrus Library website. The website is a partnership between the Citrus County Historical Society, the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, and the Citrus County Libraries Digital Collections. There is a digital collection of photographs representing each of the six communities of Citrus County. The collections provide specific historical content from Citrus County’s heritage.

Do I have to have an appointment?

Patrons MUST have an appointment to access the reading room for research. To preserve and protect these valuable historical records, access to the vault is limited to staff and trained volunteers. Having an appointment ensures staff or volunteers are available to assist with these delicate records. Please contact the museum at 352-341-6428 or email museum@citrusbocc.com to schedule an appointment.

Are there fees for research?

Patrons may also visit the reading room to conduct their own research at no charge. Please contact the museum at 352-341-6428 or email museum@citrusbocc.com to schedule an appointment.

If a patron cannot come to the museum themselves or require staff assistance with research, fees may apply. Museum staff and volunteers can conduct limited research for patrons. A museum staff person or volunteer will meet with patrons to determine what information is being requested and provide an estimate of time to complete. One hour of research is provided for free per year. For more extensive requests that will take over an hour of staff time, a research fee of $10.00 per hour will apply. Citrus County Historical Society members get 2 free hours of complementary research time per year, and the hourly research fee is reduced to $5.00 an hour. This fee covers staff time and effort and is due regardless of whether the desired information is located.

Photocopies and Scans

In general, photocopies and scans are included in the hourly rate. Patrons conducting their own research in the archives may take digital images of most records with a cell phone or personal overhead scanner. For large volume scans and scans of oversized/large items, such as maps, plats, and blueprints, additional fees may apply.

Non-Personal Use

For any public or commercial use of archival materials (including, but not limited to publications, websites, videos, or public displays) please contact the Historical Resources Manager at 352-341-6436 to discuss the details of your project.

Payment Options

Cash, check, and credit card payments are accepted. Checks should be made payable to The Citrus County Historical Society.
