Traditionally, courthouses have been symbolic of the founding and pioneering spirit of the people who settled the area and the time and events, which shaped their community. The symbolism of the 1912 Old Courthouse Heritage Museum is deeply rooted and intricately woven into the sustaining fabric of our county, our state, and our nation.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Courthouse is a priceless part of Citrus County's heritage and the focus for much of the work of the Historical Society. It serves as the location for Archives and Special Collections, headquarters of the Citrus County Historical Society, and houses the office of Citrus County's Museum Services Manager, Educational Coordinator and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum.
The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum was reopened in the historically restored 1912 Courthouse in 2000. Presentation focuses on Citrus County's history and heritage through a wide variety of exciting educational and interpretive exhibitions, both within the Museum and off-site throughout the community. From pre-history, local history, to a rotating exhibit gallery, and the Museum Store with a variety of books and gift items, visitors have a great array of things to see. The Museum hosts events and educational programs in the Courtroom, and the public is invited to rent the courtroom for private and public gatherings.
The Historic Second Floor Courtroom

The main second floor circuit courtroom was rehabilitated to its original splendor in 2000. The Elvis Presley film titled "Follow That Dream" was filmed in the historic courtroom in 1961. Very few interior historic photographs were uncovered during research for Florida Department of State, Historical Resources grants. However, MGM Home Studio gave permission to the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners to take still photographs of this film. These proved invaluable for the grant applications and for recreating the original look of the courtroom.
